Engine
 When
the boat owner is a mechanic, THIS is the heart and soul
of the boat. Esmeralde has a 40 HP Yanmar.
She'll be pushed by a Gori three-blade prop on a
saildrive.
While
some may take issue with the saildrive choice, our
reasoning is that it has lower drag under sail and
better efficiency under power. The issue of
maintenance is important with a saildrive, but Bruce the
mechanic thrives on maintenance (if there isn't
something that needs fixing, he isn't truly happy), so
we don't expect this to be a problem on board ESMERALDE.
Below
are some photos of the installation.
On the
left is the one-piece moulded pan for the engine and
saildrive that is provided by Yanmar. Below, the engine
dropped in place.
On the
left, Tony gets the motor and saildrive properly lined
up, and on the right, the saildrive drops down through
the hull. |
